A Family Affair

Caolan + Nuala, The Merchant Hotel, Belfast

A rooftop ceremony, contributions from loved ones and a nod to a love of literature meant that Nuala & Caolán’s wedding day was exactly the fun-filled colourful affair they had dreamed of.

The Wardrobe

I hate shopping for clothes at the best of times so I was delighted to find a Sophia Kokosalaki dress I loved on Net-a-Porter. It was a limited edition but unfortunately they didn’t have it my size. I emailed Sophia’s office and they said they would make the dress for me.

Caolán had a very clear idea of what he wanted. John Keenan at Bogart Menswear listened to everything that Caolán wanted and made some great suggestions. Caolán wore a beautiful slim fit, three piece tweed suit from Magee with a mustard tie.

The Venue

From the outset we wanted a city wedding. We decided on Belfast as it is a place very special to me. We wanted to find a relaxed space for our humanist ceremony. I love Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and when we went to see The Merchant Hotel I loved the blend of Victorian and art deco interiors. As soon as we saw the roof garden we knew it was the place for us. We could have the ceremony and drinks reception on the roof before heading downstairs for dinner and dancing.

The Details

I didn’t want to be given away so instead my dad, who is an uilleann piper, composed and played a tune for me as I entered. Caolán’s cousin Geraldine made our geometric detail wedding cake. The flowers were by Hollie from Rosehip and Berry Floral Studio - she completely surpassed my expectations.

We wanted a colourful and fun day that matched our style as a couple. I found the great map style invites from minted.com. They even added Belfast’s iconic Harland & Wolff cranes as a detail. Caolán is an actor and I am a producer so we wanted to bring a little nod to literature. We donated to The National Literary Trust and bought each of our guests a little penguin book as favours.

My talented cousins are The Just Adam band. They totally made the party and our friends still talk about them. As a complete surprise my friends Ash and Charlotte, who are professional dancers, performed the most beautiful duet.
